Bonnie Post, Mary Lowery, Keith Patterson and Karen Smith have just returned from the ASPPA Annual Conference in Washington DC.  The conference provided great continuing education and networking opportunities.  Karen spoke at two sessions on actuarial professionalism.

There also was a “groovy” reception Tuesday night with an ABBA Tribute Band. 


Karen Smith Speaker on NIPA webinar

Karen Smith, President of Nova 401(k) Associates, will be

speaking on the February 19, 2013 NIPA webinar entitled “Safe Harbor 401(k) Plans – An Advanced Look.” The webinar is intended for other 401(k) professionals.

The webinar will briefly review the basics of contribution options, timing of contributions and employee notification for safe harbor 401(k) plans and then, she will delve deeper into the intricacies of safe harbor plans, including:

  • Plan document set up;
  • Considerations with the ACP Safe Harbor;
  • Avoiding the ACP test;
  • Creative plan designs: top heavy exemption, cross testing, maximizing the match;
  • Permissible mid-year amendments; and
  • Stopping a safe harbor: either suspending the contribution or terminating the plan.

Karen Smith to speak on Qualification Standards

Karen Smith will speak on a panel at the ACOPA Advanced Actuarial Conference in San Francisco on June 6 –7, 2011. Karen will speak on the Qualification Standards and Carol Zimmerman of the IRS will speak on the new JBEA regulations.

US actuaries are required to comply with the Actuarial Code of Conduct. Precept 2 of the Code of Conduct provides that are actuaries may only perform services when qualified to do so. As part of Precept 2, actuaries must satisfy the US Qualification Standards. The Qualification Standards specify the required basic education and experience as well as the annual continuing education requirements.

Karen said, “I will spend the majority of my time on the changes to the continuing education requirements under the Qualification Standards for some enrolled actuaries. I am looking forward to Carol’s explanation of the new JBEA regulations that became effective May 1, 2011. I can’t wait to get away from the Houston summer heat and go to cool San Francisco!”

Dallas 401(k) Rekon Symposium a Success!

On May 17, 2011, Russell Hooker of Nova 401(k) Associates spoke to elite advisors regarding the top errors in 401(k) plans. The presentation focused on real life compliance issues that have been highlighted in the IRS 401(k) Fix-It Guide. Despite some technical difficulties with the PowerPoint presentation, the presentation was well-received.

Nova 401(k) Associates to Headline 401(k) Rekon’s Elite Advisor Series Symposium

Nova 401(k) Associates’ Russell Hooker is excited to be the keynote speaker at the symposium on May 17, 2011 at the Maggiano’s Little Italy in Plano. Russell will be covering the Top Twelve Common Mistakes in 401(k) Plans, which is built around the IRS 401(k) Fix-it Guide that outlines the most common mistakes found in the operation of 401(k) plans. 401(k) Rekon hosts over 100 Advisor Symposiums a year, but this will be the first Elite Advisor Series of 2011.

The Elite Advisor Series is geared towards experienced advisors only and advisors must manage at leave five retirement plans to attend. Other notable sessions will cover technological efficiencies, creating a service overview, and acquiring/retaining business using outside the box strategies. Nova is pleased to be joined at the event by some its external business partners including Dale Essenmacher of DAC, Gary Horby of John Hancock and Doug Reber of American Century Investments.

This event will give Nova 401(k) a chance to showcase its expertise in the areas of 401(k) administration and compliance and to connect with some of the top 401(k) advisors in the region.
